Jausenstation Gasthaus Finailhof

With its unusual history and inaccessible location on a steep mountain side at almost 2,000 metres above sea level, the Finailhof is one of the most unique mountain huts in Alto Adige.

About Jausenstation Gasthaus Finailhof

In the past the Finailhof was the scene of a series of fascinating historic events: in 1416 the mountain farmers offered hospitality to Frederick “of the empty pockets”. Today, the fourth generation of owners offers traditional home-made gourmet dishes served in the warm and welcoming “stube”.

The Finailhof is one of the oldest mountain huts in the Val Senales. The earliest references to it date back to the 11th century. Until 1967 it was the highest mountain hut in Europe. The structure of the building consists of four wooden parts, one of which dates back to the 15th century. The Finailhof became famous when, in 1416, the then owners welcomed the fugitive duke Frederick IV “of the empty pockets” and put him to work making sheep’s wool hats. In order to preserve the historic local culture and architecture the mountain hut was declared a heritage site in 1981.

Today the Gurschler family, who have lived and worked in the Finailhof for four generations, attach great importance to sustainability while at the same time offering their guests the warmest of welcomes. In the “stube” and on the terrace they will serve food that is almost entirely produced directly “from the mountain to the table”: wholesome, traditional cooking using ingredients from the mountain hut such as eggs, milk, alpine cheese, meat and speck. Among the top specialities served at the Finailhof, which enjoys a sunny position in the valley, are: roast mutton, lamb, goat and venison (on request). For children we recommend their delicious fruit juices. The stunning views over Lake Vernago are to die for!
